Why ClamAV is required and steps to install it.

Nowadays, data is very much important to persist securely. Generally a computer system without antivirus can be considered safe, if it does not have internet connectivity. But when it bridges to the internet it transpires whole world information and other unnecessary data also in it.

There are many operating systems available which have user friendly interfaces and some of them come with in-built antiviruses installed such as Windows OSs and other OS, also some of Linux OSs, antivirus come with default enable options.

ClamAV is an open source antivirus. It supports Linux distribution and built to scan malware, threats, and trojans. Also it has multiple file format scanning feature and timely basis database signatures updates.

Installation steps for ClamAV antivirus packages for Ubuntu are given below it [2].

$ sudo apt-get install clamav
$ sudo apt-get install clamav-daemon

ClamAV antivirus installed with default parameters defined in freshclam and clamd config file. It can be configured with specific requirements.

ClamAV provides full scan and scan on access feature. which can detect infected or virus files and take action based on ClamAV is configured. Using clamscan command [1], it performs a full scan in the system. And for real time scan option using clamonacc command [3].

The reason, why Linux OSs are less infected from viruses or any other infected files is because it has package managers and software repositories which download packages from verified distributions. It also has a permission mechanism to allow specific users to specific directories.

The main focus of installing antivirus in Linux OS comes in priority, when one Linux machine’s files are shared to another Windows machine. When Linux machines receive an infected file, it does not have any effect but when those files are transferred to Windows machines, those infected files damage Windows OS. So it better and safer to have an antivirus for Linux OS.
